Chips with everything...

Talking of Phil Collins - many moons ago I was playing Trivial Pursuit and the question "Who is the lead singer in Genesis?" was asked of me. My [completely genuine] reply was "I don't know, but he sounds a bit like Phil Collins."

There, I'm sure that was fascinating for you all.

God, that's pretty new-era Genesis. Still, if it said /is/, fair enough.

I quite like Phil Collins, in that the production is pretty solid. The material itself is awful, though.

Do people mistake the S3 for Bob Hoskins (er... the detective in Roger Rabbit, amongst other roles), though?

Richard

What about Mr Gabriel? Only Genesis era worth listening to!

That has been said many a time. ISTR someone saying "before potato-head came and ruined it" w.r.t. Genesis.

Wikipedea says something like "Genesis search for a replacement lead singer but couldn't find anyone better than Phil Collins" !!!!!?!!!!!

The band did audition several singers before thinking "why not just let Phil do it?". He was already familiar with the songs, sang backing vocals anyway and had written his own material.

Unfortunately, that was the start of the decline.

One thing to be said though, singing lead smoothly and drumming at the same time must be difficult. Are there others besides him and Henley from the eagles who do this live?

Phil usually didn't sing and drum at the same time - Chester Thompson did the drumming live, although Phil had a drum-kit set up as well.

I suppose, with the Eagles not being as 'flashy', musically, as Genesis, that it is easier for Henley to sing AND drum at the same time than it is for Collins to sing while flailing about.

I would *love* to have an Avantime.

No, that was idiosyncracy.

...who once beat John Bonham into second place in a poll for best drummer.

Admittedly, it was in Playboy...
