Let's get this straight.

They expect you to use your own car, regularly, to transport their kit around.

You have a night out and pay for your own beer.

Have you ever considered working for someone less pikey? - or at least someone who isn't sticking all the company cash into flash cars whilst he screws the rest of the staff.

Seriously, he is one of the better ones. The worse ones bounce wage cheques and make excuses to their staff. You would think if a company did that it was on the way out, but the second company I was made redundant from in 2006, has been trading like that for 10 years and is still going "strong".

I don't know of one internet company that has company vehicles other than the normal company car scheme and associated tax issues, and there are very few of them. Most of the engineers/it people I've known have used their own cars. I get mileage allowance and get to drive a suitable vehicle I choose. At arround 15k a year, my mileage isn't stupid, 90% of that is just the commute. It has gone up arround 3k since the last job, and I didn't need to do any business miles. 3k a year business miles in my own vehicle is hardly excessive.

It's not the mileage that's being questioned here- it's what you're being asked to do.

Humping around company equipment in your own car isn't acceptable, unless it's on a very rare, ad-hoc basis.

Sounds like he has most of the business tools, if not a van. Buying flash cars is something that company owners do anyway shirley.

When I need to use a car for work purposes, I can use a pool car if I like. I prefer to use my own car, as it's insured for business use and I get paid

As we were saying on MSN - would say Me, or Doug be fired for having cars that couldn't carry stuff? Or if in the interview they asked what I drove and said "A Renault Clio" and they'd given me the job, would they then fire me for having a V6 Clio....?

Eh? All but one of my cars have had folding seats, and none of them have handled any differently when the seats are down. The seats generally aren't connected together when up, so it's difficult to see how they'd act as any sort of brace anyway.

Heh. It'd be better built than the last hearse I went in. Well, the stretched Omega thing that followed the hearse. There were odd creaking noises from just in front of the seat and gaps round the rear quarterlight windows which opened and closed on corners. It was the only time in recent memory that I have been glad to have been travelling slowly in a car. I assume that there is supposed to be an SVA or something after the stretching process?

Anyway, yes, a Xant TD estate - I'm gonna get one next time one pops up locally for reasonable money. Or a HDi if I see one of those for cheap. If anyone fancies flogging one, bear me in mind... :-)

I know business cover was =A330 extra for the year, because it doesn't=20 involve commercial travelling. Not a great sum to pay on top of the=20 insurance.
