Heh, I've gone French today :-S

97 R reg Safrane 2.5 Exec auto!

Metallic blue, leather, AC, alloys, electric everything, Alpine stereo with

6 disc changer, cruise, all the bits, plenty of MOT, 137k miles, 3 previous women owners.

Now for the comedy, I wonder what it's actually worth.

S'quite nice though, 5 pot sounds rather good.

Ooh, I know they're so *wrong*, but I actually like those... plush sofa on wheels.

Make sure you run the air con from time to time - I know you should on anything with it fitted, but on those they're especially prone to the pump seizing from lack of use.

Erm, Renault Auto? My guess would be as much as you can get within a week of taking posession, so you sell it while it's still working :-)

"1" thing ?

You sure it's not a phone box with a Renault badge on it like the mini ads ?

Incredibly enough, other than the aircon and a couple of minor dash bulbs,

*everything* works!

Absolutely everything! I'm somewhat amazed..

Stuff that doesn't work = aircon and aircon backlighting bulbs.

Stuff that works = engine, suspension, steering, brakes, exhaust, alarm, remote for the alarm, central locking, mirrors for heat / movement / silly parking stunt on the nearside, Alpine stereo system + autochanger, front seat motors, front seat heating, drivers front seat memory, electric windows

  • one shot, headlight height adjustment, fuel computer, computer voice thing, sunroof, silly interior lights, gearbox modes are all fine, cruise control works a treat, it *all* works.

Looking through the full, specialist, service history, it started life in the West End of London with a company, then went to a lady in Southport, then to the lady motor trader I bought it off - she's used it for the last

18 months and only sold it because she's bought a W124 320-24 CE in perfect condition to replace it.

This thing is the ultimate in "stealth". It's an unmarked, clean, light metallic greyish blue Renault. That's about all I can tell you. I can't even particularly remember what it looks like and I've been driving the bloody thing all night.

I wonder if the gearbox is Volvo sourced though, like the engine?

If it is, then it'd be a cracking car for not a lot of spondoolicles. I've got a fairly strong feeling it isn't though.

Someone down the road has one and against all my better judgement and instincts I actually quite like it. It's a Renault but has the image of not being quite as poorly built and unreliable as all the other models.

What price Gallic stealth luxury? Around 750 quid at a guess.

I was thinking that, so I paid less obviously.

Looking around the Auto Trader, it seems I might have snaffled a bit of a bargain.

Yeah. Subaru Outbacks were £5K in Autotrader, too... and I'd rather try selling a Subaru than a French Executive Car.

True, but the in the last week at my local auctions, two Safranes have gone through, both fetched more than I paid for this one, and neither was anywhere near as tidy or well specced. Therefore I suspect a bargain!

Two Safranes sold at auction for what must be more than beer money?

Bloody hell. They must be putting more crack in the water down there than previously suspected ;) Good luck with it!

(I don't utterly hate Safranes, having never owned one, but they leave me cold in a way the XM never did. Mid 90s Renaults manage to combine bland with just enough ugly to be "I don't like it much" - but not enough for it to be "Argh, I hate it" or "That's interesting").

I dunno so much... the one I borrowed briefly impressed me so much in terms of just how comfy sofa like it was, I nearly bought it.

Well it was that, and the fact it was up for peanuts. :)

This one sold tonight;

It's done less miles than mine, and it's a 98 instead of a 97, but it's nowhere near as tidy as my one.

Oh, mine's got the vastly superior Alpine stereo as well..

It makes tarting up the Scorpio and sticking it on eBay almost tempting.

I never realised how truly ugly the Safrane interior was compared to even a Series II XM interior.

I wonder how disappointed the buyer will be to find they're missing a cylinder...

LOL - yeah, I noticed that.

Heh - nah, that's normal for a Renault.
