The seller seems to be a repo house or liquidation "rapid-sale" specialist. If your business is going down the tubes to the extent that you'll sell a BMW that cost over £50k new for just over £15 after less than 3 yrs, is expensive dealer servicing going to be a prime priority?

Dunno, this is a diesel, a performance car that can manage 40mpg, or 30mpg pretty much however you drive it, they'll always hold their value more than a petrol.

Take my Audi for example - it was a few months short of 8 years old, and I paid £5.7k for it. Some might say "HOW MUCH???" (SteveH?), but I had looked at about 4 or 5 others, priced anything up to £1500-£2000 cheaper, and they were all very tatty - mine was pretty much immaculate, inside and out (and it could be again if I gave it a good clean and valet). You don't see the exact model mine is come up for sale all that much (140bhp SE Estate), and although very occasionally they're offered for around £3.5-£4k, you don't often see one for less than around £5k, and still a few over £6k. I'm fairly confident that if I put the effort into making mine very presentable, I could get £6k for it if I wanted, and although I don't want to sell it at the moment, even if I did I wouldn't want anything more than a couple of hundred less than that, and I reckon I could probably get it, due to its condition.

Surely a similarly desirable diesel BMW would be worth a similar amount at a similar age? Ok, it's not quite as desirable in terms of load space, but much more desirable in that it would be very quick, and is completely loaded with every conceivable extra. If that particular one's up for grabs at £3k in 4-5 years' time, I'll have it!

Only if you believe the "cost over £55,000". Try as I might, I couldn't spot £23,000 worth of extras...

nice equipment list.. should be pretty quick with 245bhp.. trouble is every man and his dog has a beemer - smart enough, but just a bit boring and there'd be the danger of becoming a "clone"; doing things like hanging your shirts on the rear interior handles, flouting the law against hands-on mobile phone use and masterbating over a falsy perceived elevation in your social status while displaying a blatant disregard for other drivers on the road ;-p

A 530 at 4-5 years old under £5000 would be very high on my want list

New price would have been just under £40k for this spec, assuming the buyer did not haggle for much of a discount. I see the final bid was £19,100; that's a very good price - from the seller's perspective at least.

So that means the new price was £59k in 2001?

No wonder BMWs have such an appalling reputation. Despite facts being available to everyman, people still think they cost twice as much as they do. Maybe everyman doesn't want to know.

I see a final bid of £19,100. New price, probably a tad under £40k. I know mathematics and education in general are kind of taboo ni Modern Britain, but does anyone here want to have another go at the maths?

The auction claims the original price was "over £55k", and their invoice shows they paid £16.5k. I make that "over" £38,500 lost.

The final bid is irrelevant to the original purchaser. They lost the difference between the original purchase and £16.5k.

Well we're talking this one in 4-5 years' time, and this one is already 3 years old.

Neither could I. Perhaps it's all the aftermarket bits? I've got a copy of the original invoice for my E39 528 (which I bought secondhand) It's got all the toys except for sports suspension and odd wheels, but was under 40 grand.

I don't understand how it could of been 55k brand new??? They are no where near that expensive normally... Ok so the engine is slightly more powerful, but not that much, and its got a TV.

Plus the auction said it has 18" wheels, however the tyres in the pictures say otherwise.
