Mondeo 2.5 V6 - any good?

I've been offered an R reg one of these with 100k on it for £650. I'm not bothered about fuel consumption as it'll be used for going to work in occasionally, weekend fun and as a project toy.

PPC mag reckons they've got a good engine and chassis... but it is a Mondeo. It certainley drives well and is reasonably nippy and parts should be cheap. I know they can suffer from cooling probs if not looked after, and the clutch is a pig. Oh, and it's a boring mondeo.

I know I could have asked on u.r.c.misc but I thought I'd get a better answer from you lot :-)

Any opinions?

Cheers Mike P

My parents have an estate one, although it is the new shape. It's alright. Not very fast, quite thirsty, smooth though. Hasn't broken down, doesn't use oil. They're had it a year. It's just there, and just works. Brakes are crap - but that might just be me.

Mondeo.

Weekend toy.

Surely some mistake?

Yes. Depending on your perspective this can be a good thing as much as a bad thing.

Yes. The clutch is nasty.

See above. I mean, it could be a Passat, heh. Just as boring but s**te to drive.

It's a beautifully smooth, refined engine that suits the Mondeo well - more a cruiser than a bruiser in my opinion, especially the mark two Mondeo (as I recall the gearing is taller but the handling is sharper, an unusual combination).

It never _feels_ especially rapid, more a creamy smooth lugger - something like the Focus ST170 feels quicker (I seem to recall the mark two Mondeo V6 has a faster 0 - 62 time than the Focus ST170, but the Focus still feels quicker).

I had a long look at them, especially since Ghia X V6s are cheap to fix, insure, service and buy. Ultimately I decided that I was too tight to run a petrol V6, even with my typical commute I'd struggle to scrape 30, rather than struggle to get under ~50 in the summer. ;)

Yes, mistake indeed. You took 2 different parts of what he said and put them together to make something he didn't say.

Good chassis, granted. Good engine depends on what you are looking for,=20 they're not exactly what you could call "quick" - any modern hot hatch=20 will run rings around it. Taken as a touring machine though, they're=20 certainly respectable enough.

i picked up a W-reg st24 to replace my knackered Saab c900 - it's quick(ish), it doesn't have the mid-range rush of the turbo but at least it's got no lag....

0-60 7.9 -140mph. I've managed 37mpg cruising which is better than the saab.....It handles well and feels tight, OK mine only has 40K which helps....

Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate big dom, managed to produce the following words of wisdom

That's about the same performance as my Scorpio, but much better fuel consumption..

Best I've managed from it is 32mpg, but the average in my hands is a much less impressive 21.5 mpg.

Handles very well though, that was something I didn't expect.

Check where you put the coolant cap.

If it's been misplaced, I have a spare one.
