Reality check:

For f*ck's sake. I'm of the understanding that you're broke. Buy something cheap. Money you save on a car can go into a house or savings, and actually make you something, or you can keep buying cars you can't quite afford to fix and maintain and keep losing ridiculous amounts by half fixing them then getting rid. If you're going to have a project car, the only way to do it is to keep it. You'll never get back what you put into a car in terms of mods and repairs when it comes to selling it.

Clue: I'd much rather get a cab or cadge a lift to work than to buy a shitheap.

The quavers were the reason why it's such a deal ;-)

Off the top of the my head:

Xantia, Mondeo, MK2 Golf GTi, MK3 Golf, 306, Passat, Primera, Sunny, Bluebird, Corolla, Carina, Camry, Near enough any Rover with a hundred name, Ashtray, Audi 80s and 100s, Volvo 3x0s, Cavaliers, Older Civics and the funny rover alike Ballades etc. ZX. All available for naff all if you go and look for them. All normal sized cars that tall people can fit in.

Seriously, buy a cheap car and don't be like the 80% of tossers in this country getting themselves up to the nuts in debt because they can't see past the end of their noses.

I've finished being Jeremy Kyle now...

Arround the 2k mark is cheap. I'm looking at a car between 5 and 8 years old, with full dealer service history, a few motorway miles to shake it down, and be a little bigger than a shoe box.

I need to have something that won't break down, keep up with traffic on the motorway, be comfortable enough to spend upto a couple of hours a day, won't overheat when I'm spending 1 hour stationary on the M62, and I don't want to have spend every other weekend either upto my knees in shit in the scrappy, hunting ebay for a rare part that the manufacturer refuses to admit existed, breaking 15 year old never touched studs and nuts.

You could get all that from 400 quids worth of Nissan Primula, though.

Or the same amount for Ye Olde Audi - which I paid.

8 and a bit months now - 16000 miles, no breakdowns at all. Ok, I did some work, but just to tighten the suspension up to how it should have been anyway. It still does 45 to the gallon as well... It's going nowhere.
