OT: I may not be playing with cars so much.

As well as the "Porsche thrill 2.25minutes (Shortest day ever award=20 winner 2009)" I got a beginners archery course.

5 weeks into the 6 week course we jointed the club member to shoot a=20 competition, we shot to junior length while they and the visitors shot=20 to standard lengths.=20

The tournament was known as an Junior American, 3x 2.5 dozen arrows=20 (2.5dozen at 25metres, 20 metres, and 15 metres), the full time local=20 and visiting archers were shooting the full American length, roughly=20 double.

As sports go, I can't have seen many where overweight people, and=20 smokers are accepted and do fairly well. I like it, and it is time to=20 think about kit. Somewhere between =A3150 and =A3250 will get enough starte= r=20 gear to get going, but as you progess, thinks like stronger draw limbs,=20 and replacing broken arrows or getting lighter stronger ones for longer=20 distance takes over.

I guess in the short term it might be cheaper than a trackday car, but=20 could add up pretty quickly.

And it is a bloody pleasant way to spend a Sunday morning.

as much as i would like to have a second car to mess about with i figured it to expensive these days. time you bought the car, taxed it, insured and MOT'd it too kinda all adds up i do kick boxing 3 days a week and getting into the sparring side of things now and i got kitted up fairly cheap.

i got a gumshield, gloves, spot pads and a couple of spare club t-shirts and trousers for all under 100 notes in the end plus a big sports bag to carry al the shit in. just need shin guards now. eventually i was going to get a sit up bench would would also be used with dumbells and a punch bag too. cheap hobby that keeps me fit and that is fairly social.

one day i'd like a second car, and old MX5 or something would be nice or maybe even a MK3 MR2 if i find a way to fit in one.

What you do is, instead of having a car you need to pay out monthly payments for, you buy a cheap car for cash, that way what you'd normally spend on payments, goes to run another fun car :) It's +ACI-really+ACI- not expensive to run another, I can't believe how much people pay for a run of the mill motor, just buy a cheap disposable car.

Mine cost me +AKM-400, with another +AKM-150 to get it through the MOT in top shape.

I've just put a +ACI-new+ACI- engine in the locost, 130ps 1.8 Zetec, cost me

+AKM-40 delivered off eBay, I sold the inlet manifold back on the bay for +AKM-52..

It's possible to do it on a shoestring if you can ignore the shiny bits :)

Thats the thing about archery, loads there doing it, plus interclub=20 stuff, can do 2 evenings plus Sunday morning. Everyone pitches in=20 setting up and packing down.

And at =A38 a month, plus the =A340 GNAS affiliation fee that provides=20 insurance at organised shoots, not too expensive either.

Been talking to some of the members, the coach etc, and some of the=20 forums, a good riser (The handle) will last a long time, and the limbs=20 can be upgraded. Some shops will partex if you bought from them=20 originally as your strength or pocket needs and upgrade, and either way,=20 you can usually get a third of the cost back each upgrade if you sell=20 them on.

Don't tell anyone I said this, but I reckon there must be Scots blood in you somewhere.

Or tight fisted Yorkshire blood in me +ADs--)

Anyway - what he said.

I bought something fairly hateful for dicking about in - a 106 1.1 Zest

- for £650. Last tank was 52mpg, its normally 42-47.

It cost me about £160 to insure, it's quite entertaining in a slow shopping trolley way and its general crapness makes the MX-5 an even better prospect when the weather isn't shit.

I am 6'4" and I could live with a Mk3 MR2 as a fun-car. I think they're great and I nearly bought one. I still think you and Elder are showing a lack of commitment by saying you don't fit in cars you say you'd love.

Sounds like high-powered darts. (c:

Smokers do well? Are you back on the cigarettes?

I went to an archery club for a few weeks about 12 years ago. I really enjoyed it.

As you're a geek, I can see you getting into the equipment aspect of it. (c;

I've got a friend who shuns all this modern stuff like sights and replaceable recurve limbs. He's gotten into old skool hunting style equipment and has a back garden where he can practise himself to his hearts content.

It all started many moons ago when we fashioned sort of crossbows with 2 bits of wood, some nails and some knicker elastic and ran about in the woods pretending to kill imaginary Orcs and Goblins.

I think you'll find running a 'cheap' trackday car and some trackdays will cost a lot more than a hobby like archery.

Enjoy.

Something in the mid 30lb range at your draw length should be good enough for you to use for most ranges for a couple of years and half decent alu arrows will last that long easily unless you are all over the place with them. Try CBA for kit as I found them really good, but they did take some convincing to do my purple and pink fletchings.

The 26lb bow I've been drawing was really easy, even over 90 arrows (including sighters), and no shoulder ache.

I reckon a 30lb will be fine for a while, with 68inch length rather than

70 it should be fine too.

Probably looking at a KAP Prostyler, or if I can find one somewhere, a Cybow Riser and limbs (apparently a Hoyt copy from Korea that the Korean team had made for them and were then marketed, but a third of the price of a Hoyt). Unless a decent Win & Win full kit came up second hand at one of the magic snap your hand prices.

What amazes me is, you see all these bow sets on the bay of shinies, new or near new, stating something like 38-45lb pull, suit beginner/Youth. Yeah if they are built by Arnie.

Yeah a bit.=20

Sadly yes, back on about 10 a day, have been for quite a few months. =20

All the beginners are all really good laugh, and the regular members=20 seem fun, as long as you rember shooters disciple and etiquette. =20

I reckon with the right bank balance I could. =20

I want a calibrated pin site (the ones with proper adjustment, we have=20 been using a pin in a bit of blu-tac). But I will leave all the rods and=20 balancers until I'm shooting the 90metre type lengths.

I plan to stick with shooting recurve (not the fancy compounds with all=20 the pullys and cams), even though it isn't longbow, it seems more=20 traditional. =20

You will be too young to remember the series Black Arrow, The adventures=20 of William Tell, and probably the last Robin Hood series with two Robins=20 and parallel story lines. They originally followed a plot similar to the=20 current BBC series, then one actor decided to drop out, they killed=20 Robin, then brought him back as following a different version of the=20 legend. Was a bit weird, but the second version was a bit more=20 pagan/magic than wronged kindly nobleman. =20

I can walk to the archery club if I need, and shoot for fun any=20 Wednesday night, Friday night, or Sunday morning.

I don't have to compete outside the club if I don't want. The nearest track of any decent size is Oulton, then Angelesey, so both=20 involve a good drive and a lot of expense.

The good think about GNAS affiliation is, as well as liability=20 insurance, it means as long as I keep a copy of my affiliation paper=20 work in the bow case, I can shoot with any a affiliated club normally=20 for about =A35-10 a session, so if I'm stopping away somewhere, I don't=20 even need to miss practice/training.

BTW, I'm hoping that this

might finish the auction early for the right price. If not I'll have to take my chances with it.

If I'm reading that picture correctly, those are carbon limbs, not the usual wood/grp and it comes with 6 Easton xx75s which will be a tad better than the Jazz arrows I've been shooting, and should be the correct length even by what he has told me, but I'm getting him to re- measure.

My Gran's from Durham somewhere, the rest of my family is from Yorkshire for the last few gens :)

It's not that I like being tight (I don't dislike it either +ADs-) it's just that money is tight for what basically boils down to a hobby.

The fact that I seem to make a profit every time I change the engine is just coincidence +ADs-)
