This is a simple question but I don't want to reboot my machine to access Google.

What causes a Windows box to still work with email and Usenet but not with Internet Explorer? My notebook will do it after hibernation but sometimes after a period of hours...

I remember waking up in an IT course and there was something about DNS or something or other, but surely, it'll refresh this funkiness from time to time?

I don't think it refreshes anything like that automatically, but I'm pretty sure it's something to do with DNS - I've had similar problems in the past. You want to do one of a few things:

  1. Use XP's 'Repair' function. Often works.
  2. Log on to your router's home page (192.168.2.1 on my Belkin) and restart the router from there.
  3. Power down both router and cable modem, wait 30 seconds, then re-power cable modem, wait for it to boot up (i.e. lights to settle), then re-power-up the router and wait for that to boot up. Or it might be the other order - router then modem.

What error are you getting? It's not a problem I have had and if it was the DNS server then you wouldn't bet the IP address for the news, POP or SMTP servers. Do you connect through a proxy server?

Erm, well, there's this modem thingie, which hooks into the WiFi router, and I connect to the WiFi.

Broadband is terrible. It means numpties can be connected... :)

Could be that you have some kind of dodgy thing installed somewhere which is changing your proxy settings for you. This happened to someone I know once. Check in tools/internet options/connections/lan settings, see if there's any proxy set up.

Dos Box

ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /flushdns (this flushes the resolver cache and makes windows look for a new version of the site)

to check if DNS is ok try using NSLOOKUP from a dos window, ie nslookup demon.net

Delete temp int files

Thats what I would do in that order
