I'm not so sure about that myself, or at least not with regards to where I bought the Passat from - it's came with cover up to the total value of the vehicle for 12 months.

I know a lot of policies cover you mechanically in the same way - but the overall benefits of the Tesco policy come very close to the total peace of mind given by a lease car.
YMMV.
