AM I spinning???

Went to the track last week, and wanted some input on my results. I ran the 1/8 mile track at Sealey, TX... My fastest time was 7.07 at 101 mph. A few guys there stated that my 60 foot time of 1.76 should have been a little better with a mph like that. What do you guys think? Anyone running about the same, and what were your 60 foot times? I am running 28" Mickey's ET streets, with a 4.56 gear... 66 coupe. Thanks for the input. Mark ps- might be a little too much tire pressure at 15 pounds... what do you guys run at the track?

I think we need more info to base a answer on. The first thing that came to mind was what type of tranny and launch style/converter size. Also some info on the rest of the drive train would help. Your 60 ft could be low, but with a 4.56 gear I'm guessing this is a low torque high rpm setup which may slow down the 60 ft.. My 89 LX with 4.10 gears, 5 speed tranny, and mild

342 cid ran a best of 1.57 60 ft, but ran outta breath early and only went 12.40 @ 109 mph. The same motor in an 95 with an AODE w/3000 stall and 3.55 gears ran a 12.70 at 109 with a 1.80 60 ft. Your 1/8 mile times should put you in the low 11 second zone in the 1/4 mile so I would think that your 60ft would be better, but I tell if its spinning or just lazy.

Ok, so here's some more information.... 302, solid lifter cam, makes power in the upper range. 4500 stall, c-4 with a brake, running nitrous, 200 HP jets... Ford 9", 4.56 gear with spool, leaving the line at about 3000 right now. I'm going again tomorrow night if everything works out well. I am going down to 11 pounds on the tire pressure to see if that helps... also, found a problem yesterday with the WOT switch for the juice. We'll be able to tell more information after a Friday night visit to the strip. I know when I go to the 1/4 mile track, I will have to go to my

4.11's... The shift light was coming on at the end of the 1/8 mile...(no more gears!) Mark

Hi Mark,

I run a stock engine 87 coupe.....when I say stock I mean everything under the hood is *bone* stock except the K&N filter and a short belt. The rest of the car has been worked (exhaust, suspension, gears, weight) It has a full interior minus the back seat. The heater core, wipers etc are all there since I drive it on the street and to the track every week.

It's a 5 speed, 4:10's, spooled & caged.

28X11.5 MT ET Streets @ 10 pounds.

I do a burnout in 2nd gear with a line-lock I launch at 5000-5500 RPM, pop the clutch (in first)

1.66 - 1.68 sixty foot 8.22 @ 82 MPH in the 1/8th 12.97 @ 104 MPH in the 1/4

It's a bit of an oddity so it may not help you but it does show you how much you can improve your 60ft's with very little horsepower.

I would think there is some more to gain in the 60ft for sure. I do think you need to leave harder than 3000 rpm if possible. Also if you can have someone video tape your rear tire on luanch. You can paint a white stripe on the side to help you tell the rotation speeds. Just think if you get another couple tenths in the 6 ft you'll be easily in the 6 second zone for the 1/8th. :)

yup... you are correct. Went back to the strip, and busted out a 1.53 60 foot time. Letting air out of the tires certainly helped, as did getting my cut-outs installed friday afternoon for the exhaust.... I think it was being restricted quite a bit .... on the motor alone (no juice) the car improved dramatically.... went from a 8.19 to a 7.84. On the nitrous (and hitting the darn rev limiter twice), ran a 6.89. It was quite a ride. I got the front left tire off the ground for the first time ever. :-) I moved the shift point down a bit so I wouldn't hit the rev limiter, and was ready to go to the high 6.50's range, when I ran out of nitrous. It's a trial and error, for sure. The car is new to me, and I have to feel out all of the do's and don'ts. i was very happy with the 60 foot times...went from a 1.76, to a 1.53...not too bad IMO. Thanks, and more to come next Friday.... if all goes well, I am going to bump up the nitrius to 275 jets....stil running the 200 jets. The previous owner ran a best of 6.30@ 109 mph. Mark

Sounds like your getting it all sorted out. What were you launching at? Let's see, a C4 with a brake, and a 4500 stall converter. I'd try launching around 4300 to 4500 rpms, providing you have enough slick under the car. BTW, where does it redline at?
