Engine Dies '94 GT

Today while driving slowly the car just died and wouldn't restart. After about 15 minutes it started ok. Drove to my local garage to check. They advise that no fault codes were evident and the car ran well for them. Later on (a few hours later) I drove a few blocks and stopped for a few minutes. Car would not start. Waited about 10 minutes and car started and ran well. Seems to me that it's ignition related but that covers a lot of territory. Any suggestions as to the most likely areas to focus on!!

Did your tach bounce off the peg while cranking during the time it wouldnt start?

If not, most likely the ign module

Go to parts house, buy Ford ignition module wrench, Heat sink grease and ignition module...

Like Backyard posted, likely the ignition module. They fail from heat, so when the car is still cold it will run fine, but when it warms up the ignition module will cease to function again.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I have a similar problem with my 94 GT. Doesn't want to start when hot, after an hour or two starts and runs fine.

Haven't found the problem yet. The car only died once while running but has a recurring starting problem whether hot or cold but it always eventually starts. Followed the suggestions from Backyard Mechanic re fuel issues and again nothing. Tried pulling codes immediately following an no start and only got back code 111 (system pass). Car started immediately after removing the code reader. The shop doing some differential work is inclined to think it's a fuel issue but I'm not so sure. On Sunday after having difficulty starting, I took it out for a brief WOT run. Ran without hesitation to 5200 rpm (shift point) in 1st thru 3rd. Plugs, coil, rotor and distributor cap were replaced a couple of years ago (less than 15K kilometres). Reinstalled my original coil as well as the ignition module (used) but nothing changed. I'm wondering about the stator but the shop thinks not.

I'll post again when it's solved.

Keep us posted.

I got mine squared away. Backyard gets some credit when due. Read some older posts about the IAC valve. This was the major issue. A new MSD distributor and a new TFI module also made a noticable improvement.

Is there a TFI module on the '94 GT? There is the ignition module mounted on the RH fender. The distributor has a stator (Hall effect switching device). I'm beginning to think that is where the problem is. Can the stator be replaced without removing the distributor?

I walked out of Advanced Auto parts cause the guy insisted that my TFI was mounted on my distributor. This is the ignition module we refer to. As you know, on 94 and 95, it was relocated to the inner fender under the MAF duct and below the SPOUT connector. It's on a nice little heat sink to help keep things cool. Same part # as everyone elses, different location.

Never worked on stators. I'm sure you can get it out with out pulling the whole distributor. I did a MSD billet, but paid dearly for it. Nice unit though. My car has well over 100,000 on it, so I don't hesitate installing new replacements.

BTW, I keep my old TFIs, as spares, in the trunk or wherever. A new one was just under $100 at NAPA

I think it IS the stator /hall effect whatever it's called. I had a 95 gt do the same thing. It'snto the ignition module. They put it in a nice cool area and they don't break anymore. It will slowly get worse up to a point where the car only runs for 15 seconds or and dies. Have the dealer replaced the stator.

The problem was the stator.

Awesome. After they fixed it on my 95GT, I no longer had pinging issues as well. Ran like new again.
