Gone....

Just rig a wire with a switch to the Ignition terminal on the selonoid. Car won't crank unless the switch is on, cuz it won't know that you are turning the key!

Around 7/28/2003 6:15 PM, Carl Saiyed spake thusly:

Oooh, that gives me an idea for a cheap ignition switch killer:

My stang has one of those stupid knobs on the underside of the steering column that you have to press to remove the key.

I'm thinking there's a way to hook it up like you suggest, so it'd pull double duty; not only do you have to hold it down to get the key out, you also have to hold it down while turning the key to start it... Sneaky, and it's not something a thief (with keys to my car) would be expecting.

(Course, it's probably a trivial matter for a pro to hotwire my car, which would make a kill switch on the ignition switch pretty much useless...)

I think I'll just take comfort in the fact that no-op 1983 V6 Mustangs are not highly desireable cars to most people. ;)

Oh, it's ok Cindy. He actually brightened up my day some. Gave me yet another fool without a clue to laugh at.

Umm... btw.. if y'all wish, you can call me Jim. I'm used to signing off e-mails with JS as those are my initials and my typical signature... kinda stuck. Just looks a lil silly though when someone's replying to me by "name" as such. I realize that's my fault though. ;-)

Thank you very much. :-) I'm sure I'll need it, but I've been in good spirits throughout it all. Everyone's thoughts are appreciated. Even DP and the like. What's life if you can't be amused by fools?

I almost want to go to the trial and just tell him he better get a job at McDonalds and hope he can work his way up to being a manager because he's not smart enough to make it stealing cars.

I'm not real sure of the circuitry on my car. It may be like some of the other vehicles on the road where the solenoid is built into the starter.

Also, I'd rather cut the fuel. Lots of places to break the circuit to the fuel system, and hotwiring the solenoid/starter still won't make the car go.

Since the car had to sleep here tonight for the adjuster to look at in the morning, I'm holding the 20A main fuse to the fuel supply circuit with me. Key or not, it's not going anywhere without a tow truck.

You're right... pretty easy. Break the ignition switch, turn it to on, pop the hood, stick a screwdriver (or whatever tool that was used to break the ignition) to short the solenoid, and off they go.

In fact, you can use a screwdriver, stick it right under the lock cylinder in the hatch, pound it up through the deck, pop the cylinder out, use the same screwdriver to open the hatch by inserting it into the hole from the lock cylinder and turning like a key. That gets you into the car pretty easily. Bought a car that was broken into like that before I'd bought it.

Fox hoods can be popped by reaching up under the front facia, feeling the hood cable, and getting your finger on the release mechanism that it pulls. Anything 79-93 (87-93 LX only) is *real* simple to do that on.

The Foxes are cake to grab if necessary... but you're right, a no-op 1983

3.8 V6 isn't real desirable to most thieves.

You're absolutely right... about the coil wires. We have spent so much time under the hoods of cars this past month that have them, it was the first thing I tought of ... without thinking.

Hope you get something figured out.

OH! I agree, cut his hand off. It serves two purposes:

1) it punishes him 2) it tells the world he's a no good horse thief.

Or... didn't they hang horse thieves in the old days?

It's not going anywhere. ;-) Keys or not. Unless they have a tow truck, or they're smart enough to figure out the simple trick that I did. Judging from what they've done already, well, I don't think they'll ever get it if I give them all the pieces and the tools to do it with.

Yeah, I believe so. I've heard that's what they did. Stealing your horse was a big deal back in the good ol' days.

Politically correctness sucks...

JS/Jim (hehe),

I must admit you're handling the situation far better than I ever could. I'd find the little bastard and personally cut both of his damn hands off and break his damn legs. Ooooooo I'd be so mad... gah just thinking a/b someone stealing my car makes me mad. And I'm SURE mine isn't even close to as nice as yours is.. mine is only a 98 Mustang GT.. and I hafta get the clutch replaced.. which actually reminds me of a question I was going to ask. When I get a 3.73 gearset installed.. does that go into the transmission or into the rear differential? Sorry a/b the newbieness again... but I don't want them ripping me off & telling me they hafta charge $800-$900 labor because the gears go into the rear differential & they really don't. I figure if they're gonna hafta drop the tranny to replace the clutch then they should replace the gears also w/out making me pay $400-$450 labor. Thanks... and I'm glad things are looking up for ya JS. Hope it continues to!

Mike,

When you have a weekend like I had, the car is almost secondary.

I was far less concerned about the car than I was about my girl and my aunt. Even beyond that, having a place to live is more important than having a Cobra to drive. I also own an '88 LX 5.0 5-speed notch, '85 GT 5.0 AOD, '90 LX convertible, and an '89 Probe GT Turbo 5-speed. It's not like I wasn't going to get to work. They have to steal a lot more cars (in two completely different areas) than that one. And those are just the ones that run.

Thanks for the well wishes though.

As for the gears, they go in the rear end for sure. I've never had them installed, so I don't know how much they cost.

DIS system.... there is no coil wire. Have to be a little more crafty.

Put a fuel pump cutoff in the thing - I do that in all my cars - simple, cheap, I've had two attempts at car theft on me (one in Chicago, one in Denver), jacked my ignition switch good both times, but nobody else has driven the cat.
