Hey Don,

I saw a recent post from you about getting a new steering rack installed in your car. I was wondering what type of rack you bought and from where?

I asked because the rack in my 88GT Convertible is leaking from both sides and needs to be replaced. I was originally going to buy a Flaming River manual steering rack kit, but at about $420 it is a bit expensive for me right now and I really need to get the darn thing replaced.

I got one from Pep Boys. I do have a hookup there, so I got it a bit cheaper than usual. The list price anywhere from $75-$90 and I picked it up for $60.

Pep Boys sells theirs for $89 + tax.

The installation is not all that hard if you attempt to do it yourself. I was cautioned to drive it for a couple of days then have it rechecked. Same goes for the alignment. If you don't have good struts, now would be the time to do them as half the work would already be done. You can pick up the struts for $35 a piece in stock form.

Hope this helps,

Wow even a list price of $75 - $90 seems cheep to me! The local autozones are selling them for something like $130 plus a $40 core charge. I will be doing it myself, doesn't look too tough. The only thing I am unsure of is how to bleed any air out of the system. I guess I will tackle that when the time comes. Thanks for the info.

Uhhh, I forgot to tell you about the core charge. Pep Boys has like a $140 core charge. I know it seems backwards from the AutoZone deal, but I didn't flinch since I didn't have to worry about the core charge with my buddy.

If you take yours off before you get up there then you won't have to worry about it either!
