I recently tackled this job on my 95 4x4. It was quite easy once I figured it out. I could remove the starter now in under 15 minutes. Here's how I did it:
-remove the front skid plate
-disconnect the battery
-reach down from the top passenger side and disconnect the wire with the red rubber boot
-use a universal-jointed ratchet and various extensions to remove the two starter bolts from under the truck. You may also need a breaker bar
-twist the starter and remove it straight out the front
- disconnect the wires along the way (mine were long enough to remove once the starter was almost out)
Installation is, of course, the reverse.
I hope this helps. Another tip: clean and dry the underside before doing this job (and any other under truck jobs). I ended up with all kinds of crap falling in my mouth and eyes while lying under there. Hard to wipe your eyes with greasy hands!
