A free 91 240SX! needs a radiator

Hi guys,

Well it is free, for me. Anyway, my girlfriend has a 1991 240SX that needs a new radiator, the car runs great and the only problem with the car is that it has been wrecked and repaired with fender and headlight that is another color. Not a bad deal for free, eh? Anyway I'm going to replace the radiator, rather, have it replaced by someone, and I was curious what the labor would cost and what would be a reasonable charge. I will obtain the radiator myself. Other than the radiator, what else should I bring to the mechanic I choose to have it installed? (Gaskets, sealants, etc.) I will supply all parts so any guesstimates on a fair labor price is much appreciated!

Thanks, Mark

I don't know about that particular model, but most radiators can be removed in less than 5 minutes and are held in place with about 4 bolts only !

The main rubber hoses, usually one upper and one lower, need to be undone, then re-fastened, and sometimes the clips securing them can get seized and slow down the task (this is not common though). Some models of Nissan radiator are an utter bastard to get at, those clips. This can depend on whoever installed them in the first place, whether they had the foresight to align the screw-heads facing the most accessable direction

If these rubber hoses are in poor condition, then it is sensible to replace them with new ones at the time. Can save a roadside overheating, breakdown and tow ! If these hoses are in good condition, then re-use of them is plenty ok

Remember to bring plenty of new antifreeze/anticorrosion coolant, as suitable for your region where you live.

Most of the old coolant/water will get spilled when doing the job, so might as well replace it anyway

Some models of car (dunno which ones) require a specific re-filling/bleeding air procedure, to ensure that the coolant is entirely filled and air pockets are not left in the system.
