Clutch Problems - Cant go over 50 MPH - Causes

I have a Nissan 240 SX (1993 model) which lately is having problems with pickup etc... It is a clutch problem and the expense to fix it is going to be $700 ++.

Thanks for all you guys for responding to my earlier posting.

Question:

I am the Single owner of this car and do take good care of the car for the most part.

What are the reasons the Clutch can go bad ? Were there any earlier signs which I might have ignored ?

I can switch gears from 1-5 & Reverse without any problems. It does not slip at all. It does make SQUEAKY noise when I slow down, though.

How long can I wait before getting the CLUTCH assembly replaced. Can I prolong for a week or two ?

I would like to show it to few mechanics before going ahead.

It's a wear item like the brakes. Everytime you disengage the clutch and re engage it, it wears some. If you never change gears, just like if you never step on the brakes, they last forever. And like the brakes depending on how they are used, they can wear out faster or slower. I ussually get about

100,000+ miles out of a clutch, some people get less than 50,000.

The main thing that will kill a clutch quickly is to use the clutch to hold the car on a hill waiting for a light. That's murder on them.
