Delayed start 96 Sentra

I posted about this intermittent start problem before. But there is another symptom I forgot to mention, maybe it is important: Often, after turning the key all the way to "start" ands holding it there, there will be nothing happenning for one or two seconds, then the engine will start to turn over, and fire up.



I had a parts store hook up a machine to the battery and they said the battery is good, and so is the alternator.


I've never encountered this before. It's as though something has to build up a charge before the current is allowed through. Any ideas welcome !

sounds like a bad ignition switch. it's old enough. BTW,having too much crap on your keychain can wear out a lock cylinder faster.

I have occasionally seen this in starters beginning to go bad. If you can see a path to the starter, have a helper smack it with a broom stick when you first turn the key and see if that makes it suddenly start. If it does, then the problem is the starter.

Or dead spot in the windings. Does Nissan sell solenoids separately or make you buy a whole starter like many others do?

I don't know. My Acura Integra didn't have a separate solenoid,but I found a place that sold a rebuild kit,cost me $30 total. the hardest part was getting the starter out to work on it.

Thanks agin for the replies. Well, it finally went totally dead, so I had a mechanic look at it. It was the ignition switch ! Since he installed a new ign sw, the car has been fine for 2 days now.
