Nissan Armada

I am planning a purchase within the next month. I was considering the

2004 Toyota Sienna but am now taking a hard look at the Nissan Armada. Can anyone tell me when it will become available? What about the price for it? I am looking at the higher model with 4WD, 8 Pass, leather? Any info would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Look for it in dealerships around 10/1/03. According to Car & Driver, the

2WD version starts around $35,000. The loaded model with 4WD will probably go for $45,000. Seems to be priced a couple thousand less than a Suburban, yet accelerates better, tows better, and maybe has a few more geegaws than the standard Chevy.

I saw the Titan at the Detroit auto show, and I like it's looks. I'm not so sure about the Armada, though I've yet to see it in person. The other thing I would add is that it is time for Nissan interior designers to take some lessons from their counterparts at Audi. But, then, the Sienna isn't much better in this regard, in my opinion.

I always make it a practice never to purchase first year new vehicles regardless of the car maker. In the first year production run, there are always manufacturing problems that are getting sorted out. Ultimately those manufacturing issues are passed along to the finished product.

Just my two cents.

Matt:

I'm not so sure the Armada is a 1st year vehicle. I think it is (or may be) the Nissan Patrol, which I belive has either a V8 or an I6. I'm guessing that they just took the Patrol and reconfigured it.

Kind of reminds me of my Kia Sedona. I bought it first year only because I knew the Kia Carnival (same minivan/different engine) had been rummaging around Europe and the outback of Australia for several years.

I don't think the Armada is based on the Patrol. I think it's based on their new PU, which is also all new.

I bought one of the first Pathfinders, but it didn't bother me because it really was basically a pickup, with a different body from the front seats aft and a different rear suspension. So it was mostly old. But I think the Armada is entirely brand new (and WAAAAAY too big). And the engine is brand new too, though I think it steals a lot from the 3.5L V6.

Okay, I wasn't sure. I had seen the Patrol for some years and hoped it (or something like it) would come to the US.

I still miss my '87 hardbody.

Wouldn't be suprised. The VQ series is an awesome engine. I just ran into a guy who has an '85 300z it looks wonderful. My '98 Max ran like a champ at

90+ on the way to work this morning.

Hey, you work at Almaden! That is a very cool place. (My aunt worked there for ten or so years.)

Definitely based on the pickup, although the Armada will be available prior to the pickup. Also, the engine is not brand new, but based on the V8 currently in the Q45. Same for the transmission. And I agree with you -- the Armada is huge, on paper anyway.

Yesterday I was at Stevens Creek Nissan (San Jose area) for a voluntary recall on the airbag module for my wife's early 1995 Altima. In drives an Off Road version of the Nissan Armada, along with 2 other large SUVs...Toyota and Ford.  The Armada had "distributor" license plates on it and both the driver and a young woman had Nissan T-shirts on.  Looked like a road show of some sort going on.  The back had several suitcases in it that hardly dented the cargo space. The size reminds me of my two brother's 4WD vehicles that they use in the Sierra and the haul trailers or tote very large ton + campers.  Chevy 2500 Diesel with crew cab and equivalent extended cab Ford 3/4 ton with extended cab.  Both with the large diesel engines. Nobody was invited to go inside it but I did look in all the windows and the rear was open. In this morning's San Jose Mercury-News there's an article on the Armada.  As the driver at the dealer's said it confirms 305 HP.  I'll bet they don't get the 11 mpg hauling a large 5th wheel trailer at

75 mph that my brother with the Ford gets or my other brother's 12 or so mpg at highway speeds with the ton and a half camper on back or the same without the camper but with a 24 foot car trailer with a 3 ton 1920s automobile in it. I wonder if they've made a tactical error by not offering a diesel engine??? The article says prices to be announced NEXT WEEK.  The article says it'll be on sale THIS MONTH. There are no pictures in the Internet posting of the article but you can read the text for the next 5 or 7 days at:  Nissan Armada article

The original Hardbody, the Pathfinder before '96, the Frontier, and the Xterra are all basically the same vehicle. The superficial giveaway to this is that they all use the same windshield. I bet you'll find the same front torsion bar suspension on all of them, and the frames will be very similar. So you can have a new version of your '87 Hardbody. And anyone who preferred the old Pathfinder to the new one, can get almost the same thing with an Xterra. Yes, there are sheet metal/plastic, engine, etc. differences.

It's a credit to the quality of the original design back in '86 or so that they can still sell competitive vehicles on this platform. And it must be cheap to tool up for a "new" model like the Xterra.
