odometer LED?

I have a 1998 Nissan Frontier XE King Cab, with 113,500 miles on it. For the last few months the odometer quits functioning at times. It will work normally, then it will disappear, or sometimes, when I start the truck it is not on, then after driving 5-10 miles it magically appears. It doesn't seem to be getting any worse, but I would say it only operates about 30-40% of the time.

Is this an expensive item to replace? Would I be better off leaving this repair (or replacement) to the dealer, rather than an independent repair shop?

Thanks for any and all information.

Hello Robert,

I think it is in the ignition switch. My odometer does not go off unless I wiggle key before removing, and sometimes not then. Does not kill battery, so must be milliamps current wise. I'll wait before fixing as I have other projects with higher priority.

Mike, thanks for the information. I kinda doubt that my problem is connected to the ignition switch, because it always goes off when the engine is shut off. But you could be correct. I'm totally confused about it, and my experience with cars is only through driving them, and not working on them.

In any event, I appreciate your comments. I'm going to wait also.

Take care,

Robert
