Re: '97 Hardbody Check Engine Light

Not sure that the 97's had it, but the 96 PU 4 banger had a recall on the throttle position sensor that would cause the light to come and stay on....

.. came on with about 75,000 miles on the odometer.

There are several reasons why the CE light can come on.

  1. O2 sensor did go
  2. Something went in engine
  3. Gas cap is loose
  4. Many other things.

My suggestion is to go to Autozone and get them to pull the code from the engine. They'll do that for free, and then you can determine whether or not it's worth a trip to the dealer. My Fronty had the SES light come on at 900 miles. Turned out some emission exhaust valve had gone.

I would get it looked at asap, as you never know if something significant went. When you have some time, check out

and click on the Forums, then Hardbody Hangout. I'll bet some people there have had the same probs as you.

Good luck!!
