Why use a filter at all? If the problem is moisture, then do something that will fix the moisture. Perhaps a bag of dessicant in the airbox would work?

I'm a little confused as to why running the AC without the recirculation on for a day or so every now and then to clean everything out is such a chore.

Problem is, I don't think that'd prevent the problem. You have to let it dry out most of the time, not the other way around. Did get a good tip from one guy though: flip it to non-recirc when you shut it off. Dunno if it'll let enough moisture evaporate when it's not running, but sounds logical. Guess I'll know if it worked in a year or so :)
