406 C/D player

Just bought a 99 - 406 3 days ago and was told last night in the Boozer that you can fit a C/D player in the boot. This was mentioned by more than 1 person, is there any truth in this? Will it cost me more than a couple of shandys? If I am not being wound up, is it easy to fit, or do you have to go to a specialist

It is certainly true that you can because my 99 406 has one, it is a 6 changer. It's under a cover down on the left side of the boot and was there from new. As to fitting it, that is beyond me.

This is a separate question really - but does anyone have any trouble playing cd's on the standard fit 6-dosc unit? I recently got a 99 406 GLX and find the unit is very touchy about what cd's will work. Very few CD-R's will work and even the slightest scratch on normal audio cd's will cause the tracks to skip around.

Thanks.

I've had several 406's which have all played ordinary CD's without a problem, although I don't use it very much. It's 'not a good thing' to scratch CD's - even slightly! CDR are notoriously difficult in cars - I think many (even very recent) cars won't play them at all.

do you use CD's that you have made and burned yourself?

There is a place for a cd player in the 406 on the left hand side (in the Boot) and if you have any simple skills you can fit it yourself Most if not all 406 and 306's have the wires and cd frames ready for the install so its as simple as removing a few Torx screws Holding the carpet and then

2 TORX screws that are holding the cd frame and dropping the cd player(PLUG IN THE WIRES) in and putting the screws back (TIDY) and then enjoy hours of music!! Good luck

I have a '98 406 with a Philips 6-CD changer in the boot.

I can play all my CD-R no problem. It sounds as though perhaps you have a different model of CD changer?

I think I actually have a problem with my cd player. All is standard fit stuff - Clarion head unit and whatever goes in the boot. Same standard model I had in my 99 206 GLX when it was new... this is a 99 406 GLX and looks identical.

However, since originally posting I have been told about a known problem with water ingress via the rear n/s light cluster... right beside the cd player!

I find all cd's a bit jumpy and the unit is very sensitive to scratches etc. Something I need to get looked at - but haven't done yet.

Thanks for your reply.

"However, since originally posting I have been told about a known problem with water ingress via the rear n/s light cluster... right beside the cd player!"

It's a very annoying problem, easily solved tho with the application of some silicone sealant to the shroud surrounding the rear light cluster under the boot lid. I also keep the cd changer covered with a plastic bag just in case.

Incidentally, didn't see the original post but I have the Philips factory fitted changer on my 406 and it's very tempremental, sometimes plays CDR's sometimes doesn't, could it be dependant on which CD writer I use to burn them?

Also is there a way of replacing the changer with a dedicated MP3 player?

Thx

Chris
