998 406 STDT Diesel Wagon & Carbon Build Up

Hi Group,

Wondering if someone can assist. I am looking at buying a 1998 406 STDT Diesel Wagon. They are rare as hens teeth 2nd hand in South Australia, and have had it checked out by the local AAA other than the dealer.

The AAA's mechanics report on it says that there is ....severe carbon ( and some oil) build up in the inlet manifold/inlet track... and is classed as a serious problem. However the dealer informs me that this is not a major issue and that the AAA is not familiar with the Peugeots. The problem is that there is only one licenced service location in S Aus for Peugeots and that is the dealers, and hence I can not get a reliable opinion.

I am trying to get an understanding of what is typical in these cars, and if it is a peculiarity before embarking on my investment.

Any suggestions or comments are much appreciated.

Regards Anthony

My 405 1.9TD has a black inlet, as does the engine I've just removed from my mums 405, and the replacement one. They blow oil into the airbox and immediately suck it back towards the turbo. Even worse if they have EGR. The back of the valves nearest the EGR port will have

5-10mm of carbon on them. There are some cleaners that will shift this whilst the engine is running.
