Why oh why does every car manufacturer have to have a go at every type of car?

Saab should concentrate on what they're best at, turbo charged executive cars. FFS are they going to release a handbag car soon?!?

Al,

"Executive cars"?

hehahah, umm not all of us are millionaires here, nor are we rich

Saab made fun cars too for people that liked to not wear the drycleaned shirt, tie and pants too.

That was the whole thing about Saab, a car for everyone, not just the elitists.

Live a little.

tie and pants too.

They are typically considered as 'executive cars' though. Heck, there's enough toys in them !

And luxury SUVs are the new executive car.

I'll pass on that one. I have *no* desire to own an SUV. Never mind the fact it doesn't appeal, I'd be embarassed to own one.

Me too, but it's hard to deny that there's a lot of profit in them. Plenty of people seem to love the big ugly lumbering things.

This sounds more like a description of Volkswagen, not Saab.

Really? Would you also be embarrassed to own a 19 foot powerboat too? How then would propose that one would trailer said boat to the water? Surely not with your SAAB, turbo charged or otherwise.

I just got back from 2 weeks vacationing at a beautiful lakeside cottage. I hauled 4 people, their luggage, 2 retrievers and my powerboat 250 miles each way with one vehicle. It was one of those damned SUVs! *gasp* A V8 Ford Exploder no less!

SUVs are just vehicles. They have a purpose, it is just not for transporting humans around. For that there are much better instruments.

-Fred W I am *not* embarrassed to be an SUV owner. (and a couple of SAABs, 3 BMWs and a Jeep Wrangler too, FWIW)

Twin turbo that sucker and other SAAB-ify steps and put it against the Cayenne.

*Anything* would look better than the Cayenne !

True, but the point made was that SUV is now THE car to have for the middle classes. That has nothing to do with off-road driving or pulling boats.

I don't understand it either, maybe I'm too old. It may just be that the SUV is seen as more substantial. It's probably more difficult to damage by trivial collisions, but my Saab 9000 has proven very tough in this respect.

An SUV should be part "Utility" and Off-Road.

Before the term SUV was created, people called the vehicles ORVs, "Off Road Vehicles", so I guess SUV is correct, because "Sport Utility Vehicle" NEVER SEES ANYTHING BUT PRISTINE PAVEMENT.

Here are some examples of what a real SUV should look like.

By the way, does Land Rover still do Camel Trophy today?

And my point was that I am *not* embarrased to drive own one.

Well, consider this... If I, for example, could only own one vehicle, because I am a trailer-boater, it would most likely be an SUV. But, since I am lucky enough to *not* be limited to just one, I own some nice cars too.

I just don't understand some people's need to denigrate others just because of what they own or drive. Well, except Yugo owners. They deserve it... ;-)

Fred,

And of course, don't forget BMW owners (generally speaking here of course), because of the "driver syndrome" they receive in getting behind the wheel, they are referred to (explitive, deleteds) on the road, of course generally speaking once again.

Talking of which.....

I only just got my 'new' 9000 CSE 2.0 lpt.

1st full day I have it, I drive down my road on the way to work. There's traffic at the T junction with the 'main road' as usual so I wait to join it.

There's a Vauxhall Astra Van parked to my immediate left ( this is the UK btw ) . For no apparent reason it suddenly reverses into me !

There's a bump. I get out. The Astra van has a serious dent in its rear bumper. My

9000 has a grey mark on the front bumper where it hit. Nothing else.

We exchanged details. I said I wasn't intending to report it to my insurance company since there was no apparent sign of damage. He rang a day or two later to say he wasn't going to be making an insurance claim either. His boss is making him pay for his repairs though.

I guess I ought to get round to polishing the grey mark out !

It's insanity but sadly true.

Actually, I can't imagine that a Saab wouldn't rise to the task. My former Vauxhall 2.0 litre Cavalier(s) was voted a great towing vehicle and I don't see anything that would prevent a Saab from fulfilling the same role.

An SUV is to be honest simply a marketing ploy.

If you lived in the UK and had a farm, I'm sure you would own a Land Rover. It's purpose built for the task. Tough, rough, basic and very durable.

SUVs are a 'boutique' version of such practical vehicles. In reality they are rarely used off-road or indeed in any circumstances that would reasonably justify their style of construction.

A popular name for them in the UK is 'Chelsea Tractors'.

Green Wellies are required too of course !
