Fun While it Lasted

My grandad told me that earlier this week he was delivering a load of sand to a job site in the '51 2R16 Dump Truck I won in the raffle and traded him for the Scotsman PU. He said that suddenly the engine started to rattle (245 Big 6) and then started to knock. It's either a rod or the timing gear may be stripped. (That happened to the Scotsman PU. We thought it was a rod, but we replaced the timing gear and the little motor's never ran so good) My grandad's gonna pull the pan and see what the problem is. Hopefully we'll get lucky and it won't be anything too serious. But, if it is, he has another big 6 destined for the fire truck, but it's a long ways down the list of projects.

Stangest thing! I fired up the dump truck 2 days later and all the noise was gone!!! No knocks, rattles, skips, pops or anything else. Just purred like a kitten.

One of my neighbors worked for a local paving company years ago. One of their Studebaker company trucks, a 2R11, did the same thing. They had the welder make a tow bar to get it back to Corydon, since they were working about 80 miles away.

Next day the mechanic started to work > Hm... That is kinda unusual. I wonder what the problem was that made it

I ran the truck untill it warmed up good.O.P.started out at 60 cold then eased down to 35 after warmup. I didn't drive it, but revved it up to about 3000 and held it to see what happened. It still sounded good. Time will tell I suppose. NT

Welcome to the NG Neil, glad to meet you (more or less). We may have met once before, a few years ago at a North Georgia/South Georgia chapter meeting in either Augusta or Savannah, I forget which. Anyhow, Welcome.

Jeff R., cue the NG rules.
