Jury rigs

Nov 03, 2006 2 Replies

With a dozen or so Studebaker moving in and out of my garage every year, I think I've seen every jury rig ever thought up. I don't even blink at front mounted electric fuel pumps, or wiring taped up with masking tape. On occasion, I get one that really impresses me for it's level of "rigging". My new 52 Starliner was listed with the note " Need to pump brakes", so I had a new master cylinder waiting.

I got the car, swapped the master cylinder, no change even after a free play adjustment and bleed, so I pull the front drum and notice it's a 11 inch. It's not a 11 inch backing plate off a late car though, after some research, it looks like it's a truck backing plate with a car drum. I try to adjust the shoes with the two cams, but the shoes just kick the cam off the high spot when you hit the brakes. I then pull the rear drum and find a 9 inch off who know what. I'm now installing late brakes off a Hawk to allow normal adjustment and balance the front and rear sizes.

The "truck backing plate with car drum" is supposed to work, I guess the cams don't tighten up properly? In any case you are doing the right thing as the later brakes are self energizing while the truck style brakes are not, so pedal pressure will be seriously reduced.
