OT: Lock Bumping

Loading thread data ...

I think it kind of questionable of the 'news' station to 'alert the public' ...(and let a whole group of bad guys know about it too..).. When I bought this place, I got all new locks and deadbolts and that was the first question that got asked. It cleared me out of all of the big box stores right away. (Same thing for the alarm system) I figure if they are going to tap on the lock, they'll tap on the glass and break the window...

Was that on Mazda cars? I can't see youtube on this ISP. There was an articel in the Vancouver newspaper about a week ago about Mazdas, where you pop the door open by just applying pressure to the exterior door panel just above the handle.

Which begs the question, "who would want to steal one anyhow?"

No this is a door key cut a certain way where they can insert the key most of the way in a door lock, sharply hit the key and it'll open damn near every door lock on your house unless you have expensive ($150+) locks on your doors. They can then lock the door with the same key and lock your house when they're through. Television crews tried it and got it to work just about every time. There are websites where people can order the keys and instruction on how to make and use the keys on websites. I saw another site where the same thing works on padlocks. They say locksmiths have know about this since the 1800's and often used it to get houses where people have locked their keys inside.

you aint got the bucks to stop it..or, might have a minor heart atack when you get the price.. if you GOTTA, you MUST have deep pockets.. its been trashes and cussed and discussed now for the last 6 months in the locksmith circles there are some interesting methods of slowing down the bumping of CERTAIN lock types.. but others.. are wide open.. a CARIER thing tho is 'new construction'.. why waste time bumping when all you gotta do is pry on the door frame just a bit, and OPEN THE DOOR. BTDT with some quite NEW HIGH$$$$ houses... scares the #### out of the home owners when I THEN say HOW BAD THE CONSTRUCTION really is

I figured you replace all the locks with the high dollar locks and then leave the deadbolt key on the inside (like most do) and they just break a window next to the door and open it that way. As many have found out, you secure the doors so nobody can get in... they come in through the window. By the time you're done it your house looks like a miniature prison.

actually, the fault lies with the MANUFACTURER.. they designed the system, and they have no desire to improve the system.. unless as was said, you REALLY want to spend mucho $$$ on just the lock cylinders.. those that DID fix the system, charge accordingly.. $5 keys, and $60-80 lock cylinders, handles extra...LOL

Shiva, are those locks which use the hollow cylindrical keys proof against this?

Well, So far the only person(s) locked out of the house were my daughter, and myself... But that is expected .. Jeff (My dogs' bark out of fear..) Rice

"Lee Aanderud" wrote.. The only way to keep them out is to turn your house into a bomb shelter (double reinforced steel exterior doors with pick proof locks, bars on all of the windows, weld the basement/crawlspace door shut, install an alarm system, get yourself a doberman/rottweiler/schitzoo).

"Lock Bumping, so simple a nine year old can do it... watch."

There was a case here not so long ago where they got in through the crawl space and used a sawzall to cut through the floor.
