1997 Check Engine Light

Is there anything that causes the check engine light to come on after a certain mileage (i.e. 100k)? Thanks!

The check engine light is turned on by the on-board computer when it senses something that is out of range or malfunctioning. There are tens of different sources for the CE light to turn on. Have your car connected to an OBD-2 reader. There is a plug in the dashboard for this function. The reader will tell you the fault code and you can check into a list to find was is deemed wrong in your car. Presently mine has the CE light ON for a defective coolant temperature sensor. A rather hard to reach sensor. Grrr! Felix

You can check the O2 sensor on most cars,

usually three wires, 1 earth, 1 heater supply (they need to run at about

800°C) and one signal. Check between the signal and earth. The one on my car gives 1v for 1% o2 (before the cat). After the cat, I suppose the O2 figure should be less as the cat rcombines the O2 with the CO ?
