Bought my present 99 Outback with 112,000 Km, a patchy service history, some evidence of boat towing (that I missed) and heavy tradesman loads (that I didn't!) three years ago. Got a good enough discount to get a dealer to do the 100,000 Km major service late and fit a trans oil cooler as a precaution and it's just turned 165,000 with no problems apart from the odd fuse or globe, except for a forward clutch pack in the autobox 3 weeks after purchase that was fortunately covered by warranty. Other than that it's just been tyres, routine servicing & one battery.
Bought previous '91 Liberty wgn at 116,000 with a perfect service record. Traded it on this at 335,000 Km. Clutches lasted about 120,000 Km (towing quite often). AFAIR in 7 years it cost me a radiator, alternator, a/c regas, 2 batteries and 2 ECUs apart from tyres and routine servicing, which I thought was pretty good. Neither of them ever let the family down.
Take some other people's advice and get it checked by someone who knows the make. Cheers
