I have a 1985 Toyota Camry that is stuck in reverse for no apparent reason. There were no wierd grinding or other noises. The clutch still works, but I cannot shift out of reverse. I'm not sure if it is an electronic transmission or not. Does anyone know what could the possible problem could be or what to check before taking the transmission off?

I'd guess that the shift cable(s) are damaged / rusted solid. In any case, you should be able to see the shift levers on the transmisison case, and move them by hand (or with a hammer). Another possibility is something has come adrift in the gear stick console area which is jamming the stick assembly.
