Damn, when you find out, let ME know! I believe you'll have to get under the car and remove bolts and retainers. That was how my Corolla came apart.

If it's Desert Damage, you probably won't snap a lot of bolts! (GRRRRRR!)

This *might* help...

And here, have a TSRM on me! ;)

Here's one for an '87, but it's not as complete:

Also, have a look at

click on SOGI, and have a lookat the Tech section. Also, register and become a member (if you can get asecond e-mail address, or get a yahoo address, since we pass info bye-mail and sometimes the messages fly! I have mine go to a second E-Mailaddy just for that purpose!). A lot of these guys have had Supras for aLONG time and know them inside out! Good Luck!

You can remove just the bumper covers by removing the bolts on the underside (IIRC, 10 mm) of the cover. After removing the bolts, lift up and unhook the top edge.

mostly i was looking for tricks or caveats. for power, wish i had the turbo, but nitrous does give a kick in the ass. the plan is to pull the bumpers and i'm wondering if i can still drive it with them off. i'm waiting on the haynes but i do want to get moving. the paint was cheap. gotta love that japanese blue.

yep, zero rust. your grrr implys wet air environment and i slowly combust for you.

excellent. in monty burns voice.

i just archived this whole, usefull post. take a couple of cute bims out of petty cash and take the week off.

There is a fair bit of OT banter here, but you can filter your way to some useful info as well ;-)

If you want to hot rod a Supra you really need to use the turbo engine. They can almost double the HP with just a impeller, exhaust and can make some serous HP on stock internals.

But when it comes right down to it my stock 7mge has more power than it needs in the first place so I have always been happy with mine. It even tows my little trailer with 3 ATC's piled on it without any problems at all.

When you get the bodywork compounds and the primer/paint for finishing the bumper, tell the paint shop what it's going to be used for - they have special fillers and glazes for surface prep, and special flex additives for the primer and paint.

The right paint will take minor bumps and flexing of the bumper cover without cracking or peeling off, at least for a few years till the flex additives bake out...

Don't worry. The discussion can veer off into the weeds of partisan bickering at any moment after the original question has been answered. Matter of fact, if I wanted to start it off there are several guaranteed flame-starter comments I could throw out (and duck and cover) - but I'll refrain. ;-)

You have to learn when to bail on a thread that's gone south and hit the "Ignore Thread" button (available on properly configured news programs...), and you need to killfile the few trolls here with no redeeming automotive knowledge to raise the Signal/Noise ratio. One notable nym-shifter here will take roughly 16 entries before the noise stops, be persistent till you get them all.

yes, happily the signal to noise ratio isn't really bad.

toyota lists a 40 hp boost for my motor. not quite double but a kick for sure. love the 7mge as much as the 22r. great motors.

doing the one part paint with a clearcoat. all it needs is sand, prime bare spots and paint

yes, and the desert sun chews it up. need to get it covered before it turns to dust.

i've been around usenet for a few years. i use n-filter for the really annoying. but thanks.

LOL! Good Luck! Even I gave up and joined the fray. You will too, I bet!

ULP! No, no, no! Get some Flex Primer, or you'll be doing it again in a couple years or less! The bumper/nose may *feel* pretty sturdy, but it flexes, esp with heat! Sand it, primer it with a flex primer and that should be OK, but again, only for a period.

To do it properly, you should also use a paint and a claercoat with a flex additive in it.

I bought a 240SX that someone had painted without flex. The body looked great, but the front and rear bumpers started crazing and flecking after 8 months.

Gee, my '88 is blue, and the only real bad spots are...the bumpers!

As I mentioned before, I got some flex primer, but am going with Dupli-Color paint. But, then, thanks to the wet environment (car came from Canada to New England) it has a couple holes and some rust bubbling up. It has been garaged for the past 3 years, so it's slowed down quite a bit. But I will be doing the whole car either the end of the summer or early next year.

Be prepared for a Parts Nightmare! They're getting scarce!

Definitely. But, if you Google (or know what) Hachiroku is, you'll know I think the 4A-GE is a decent engine, too! ;)

80 miles West of Boston. I lived in Andover and Lawrence for a while, and then went to Nashua for a couple years, back in the late 70's/early 80's.
