That shows the power of the consumer *if* the consumer was educated and asserted him/herself. The only reason dealers get by with it is that they can count on enough of an ignorant customer base to keep them in business ripping people off like that. They feel cocky enough that when someone who knows better comes along and tells them to pound sand, they could care less and just move on to the next customer who doesn't know any better. I've thought about writing two or three free-lance articles for the local small town newspaper here and discussing some of these practices to educate the local public about how the local dealers operate (not consolidating labor on combined work, billing for oil and filter change when neither is done, etc.). That would be an interesting experiment.
