I just got the vehical and found that the trany is filled with what looks like engine oil will this damage the trany

In your view, how exactly does this look different than transmission oil? Please explain further. Tomes

Does the vehicle have an automatic or a manual transmission?

In either event, motor oil is not the correct lubricant for the transmission and can cause damage. If it is an automatic, it is possible that the fluid hasn't been changed and it is just dirty.

Another possibility is that you confused the engine and transmission oil dipsticks, which is a common mistake on Previas.
