Cost of Blown Head Gasket, Camry 91, 4 cylinder, 162K mileage

What is the cost fixing a blown head gasket on a 1991 Camry with a 4 cylinder engine and 162K mileage? And is the car worth this investment?

Replacing a head gasket is $300-400. You may want to have other work done at the same time like the timing belt, grind the valves and replace valve seals. Whether its worth it depends on condition of the rest of the car. Ypu won't get but a few hundred for it for parts if not running.

I found that provided the car has no other problems 'waiting in the wings' as it were, and you intend to keep it quite a while..then spending a moderate sum to get it going again was worth it,..despite what others may think. This line of reasoning is based on the old saying "better the devil you know".

Alternatively, if you are not going to keep it long,...then depending on resale values, this fix may not be worth it. A '91 out here (Oz) still pulls A$5000 or so. That is because they are one of the most popular cars,..even at that age where the body is still reasonabley current.
