About the easiest car to change the oil on. I don't need to jack mine to get to the drain nut. The latest Camry filter is underneath, but next to the oil pan and not that bad either. You can but don't need to change the pan nut gasket every time, but have a new one handy in case it is bad, as they are cheap. I am on my 2nd one in 180K miles!
I tend to wait a while after shutting the engine with my 99 Camry. I wait an hour or half an hour. This way the filter drains back it's oil and doesn't leak a drop when removed...it is mounted on the front of the block, facing down and makes a mess if you do it right after shutting the engine. Plus the oil doesn't tend to scald you so bad. Yours has an oil cooler (thing with the hoses on it) mounted underneath the filter. The 99 did away with that.
