How do you reset the idiot lite on the 2005 toy tacomas it is set to come on every 5000 miles to remind you to change oil.. I change mine every 3000 so there is a 2000 mile overlap with the lite on ...Thanks
It's in the manual. You hold the trip odo button in while turning the key.

Why do you throw away good oil after 3000 miles? 5000 is a very safe oil drain interval. Modern oil is much better than oil in years past, and modern engines with clean computer-controlled combustion and tight manufacturing tolerances allow the oil to be good longer.

You are probably doing a lot of short trips to only get 6000 in a year. This qualifies as extreme duty and you should change your oil more often, twice a year would probably be a good interval. You should also try to drive for a short trip, appx. 30 minutes, once a week or so. This will bring all your lubes up to normal temp and heat the moisture out of them which prevents sludge and breakdown of the lubes. HTH, davidj92
