I would like a list of good air-cooled VW shops.
I am thinking about traveling in my 67 VW Westy from Texas to Washington DC/East Coast for fun.

Not sure if you'll get all the way up into CT, but Alpha motors on River street in Bridgeport is a good shop (Paul is the owner's name). I haven't used him since I do most my own work (bug and other cars) but many aircooled guys use him around here. He's also a really nice guy, fair pricing and likes bugs.

Paul, If you have any trouble in the DC area, this guy has a great reputation.
