heater box replacement advice needed

I have 74 BEETLE standard (not super) with I believe a single-port 69 engine. I recently lost the right-side heater box (apparently it just fell off while I was driving, ouch). I am planning to replace with "staight-pipe" solution, basically just a curved pipe connecting from the rear manifold connections to the muffler. I do not want the heater boxes as they dont work in my car anyways.

First, where could I find/buy such replacement pipes? Or is there a relatively easy way to make these? Also, I would need to replace the current cylinder tin for my car. The current cylinder tin connected on the outsides to the heater boxes but of course w/o the heater boxes they would be loose. Can you recommend a good replacement tin that would cover the open cylinder area?

As I am looking for the above mentioned solution, just replacing the boxes with "straight pipes" from the rear manifold to the muffler, I would welcome any advice and/or recomendations?

`Things' without heater boxes and also VW industrial engines had special tin that closed up that area.

Gene Berg sells reproductions of those tins. They're listed under 'Industrial Engine Air Shields' on this page:
