Torqueing heads according to 'how to rebuild your aircooled engine'. 7 ft/lb to crush the pushrods tubes, ok. 15 ft/lb one head, ok. 15 ft/lp second head, stud nearest the gen stand comes out.
Now the redneck part... can I just JBWeld it back in? I felt the hole and is just a hole, does not go through the case.
Can I? please? you all wont hate me if I fix it 'chilean' style?

No help? a Helocoil? I know I need a case saver, but dont want to accept it...

any way to do it without cracking open the case? and hand tools?

...fraid not...you can try and many if not all of us have) but it won't work. either tap for a case saver or get a repair stud if it has the big studs...repair studf has a larger and courser thread....

I will go out and see if I can get helicoils or repair studs localy. If I cannot, its JBWeld time...
I always knew this was my first engine fix so it wouldn't be the last one. I am using this one to gain practice to build a 1776 later.

you stated that the stud that pulled "did not go all the way through"...was it the one on number 3 that is "deepset"? that is the one that i have pulled a few times on the 10mm cases...it can be tapped and a helicoil installed at the bottom of the hole and not ahve to worry about the metal particles getting into the bottom end...if it is one of the others, tapping can cause metal particles to drop into the sump...be careful...a shopvac hose can be placed through the spigots to catch the chips from the backside... good luck J
the stud that pulled was the one nearest the generator stand. its the one 11 oclock in cylinder 2. I poked a wire in the hole and it did not go inside the sump...

(looking at engine case in box beside the computer desk) you are correct..that hole has one of the main bearing saddles behind it, so it does not go "through"... J
Nice... of the ones that could pull out, the one less bad, it seems.
Will try to fix it tomorrow...
