Hi all,
Been close to a year since I have posted anything about my long term (4+ years low budget) "restoration".
Well, I took the bug to my friend Tony in Tempe (I'm in Salt Lake) on Labor Day 2002 for completion of my project. I brought the bug home via UHaul last weekend. (By the way a 14ft Ford XL350 empty hauls ass towing a Bug on a trailer, at 8mpg)
I didn't keep accurate records, but my best guess is my "low budget" restore topped over $5000. It includes:
- Car - 00 (came with new gas tank, dist, carb)
- Paint - under 0 (Maaco)
- Aircooled.net (headliner, body rubber, carpet, brake shoes, shocks, etc) 0
- Tools - 0
- Tony - 00+ (lots of mechanicals, bumpers, trim, electric, late model clutch w/ 12v flywheel, complete top end motor, 6v to 12v wiper conversion,
12 v starter, running boards, heater flaps, hot air thingy for carb, wheel bearings, sand blast tin, paint wheels...)
- tires (only 2)
- seat covers (swap meet )
I know the math doesn't add, but I need to include the 2 trips to AZ...
So the next step is inspection and tags.
This will be the wife's around town car for the forseeable future (since my commute is 100 miles a day). I'll need to be content with weekends and the routine maintenance for my VW fix.
So I am sure I'll be around RAMVA more as the need will most certainly arise.
