OT Gas Prices

You can check any car (back to 1985) for what your gas mileage is at this website.

I checked my car which is a 1995 FordEscort Wagon with a 1.9L 4cyl and 5 spd manual transmission, and it gets 30mpgin the city and 38 on the Hwy. I was surprised that my wifes 95 CutlassSupreme with a 3.4L 6 banger gets only 17/26 A Suburban gets 13mpg, so theCutlass is not all that much better. It was interesting during the gas crisis during the 70's. When the prices started to rise, the value of the large V8 gas guzzler cars plumetted to zilch. This included the muscle cars that people would now give their left you know what to own. You could pick up a muscle car back then for practically pennies on the dollar. My brother got rid of his 350/4bbl Buick Gran Sport for a Pinto.

Back then you generally did not finance a car for more than 3 years. If you needed to finance it longer than that, it meant you could not afford it. In todays I want it now society, I have seen cars being financed as long as 84 months. If gas prices go sky high and the value of these expensive SUVs plummit, there are going to be a lot of people who are going to take a $20000 bath if this happens. I would say that gas would have to rise to over $2.00 per gallon before people start putting for sale signs on their Suburbans and Durangos.

Back then my Dad stopped driving his big engined Chevy and bought a

1967 VW Beetle Convertible for his daily driver. Still has it too!:~)

.............The oil embargo was when I traded a RamAir 442 for my first bug, a '67 black sedan. Driving it in Houston during the summers without airconditioning was a dehydrating experience I remember.

Ya'll must do that "new math" over where you are at. According to my calculations, and they are correct, 1 gallon equals 3.785411784 liters. But then what do I know, I'm just an American hick.

James, on this side of the pond, the standard US liquid gallon is 3.79l. In the UK and parts of Canada, the 'Imperial' gallon is 4.55l, or 1.20 US gallons.

I filled up today and paid USD$1.799/gallon = USD$0.475/liter = GBP£0.299/liter. Of course, I live in an area that traditionally has some of the lowest fuel prices in the country.

I do remember some long time ago when there was uproar when it reached £1 a gallon, about $1.33 your way, your measurements. This must have been 15 years ago! They then started selling it in litres, to make it sound less ! Considering we have oil fields here and the govt taking their wad, it is still expensive. I suppose the thinking is, smaller engines , less fuel. I pay £25 to fill up the Beetle, and about £30 to fill up the Golf. We had blockades here 2 years ago, where truckers just blocked the refineries & storage depots until the petrol stations ran dry. I work amongst a couple of storage depots, so were effectively blocked as well. I d itched the bug & cycled in. Some copper actually stopped me & asked where I was going ! As if I was going to chuck the bike under a tanker or something !

That was interesting reading. It says that fuel economy has hit its lowest point since 1980. I wonder why (SUV) that is. It said we use 115 Billion gallons of gas and diesel fuel for our personal vehicles.

I am not a fan of SUVs and don't support what this group does, but a radical environmental group called the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) has burned dozens of SUVs in Calfiornia, and painted the statement "Lazy Fat Americans" on others. Article here.

The "Club" called SUV Owners of America,

is asking peopleto sign a petition that they will give to ELF to demand that they stop damagingSUVs. Ok so you get a petition signed by a bunch of SUV owners, you give it toa radical eco terrorist group. The terrorist group is not going to say "Oh Ididn't realize that I was making these people mad so I better stop now". Thepetition idea might have looked good on paper, but.....
