OT Gas Prices

I was reading a news story about a gas crisis in Phoneix that happend because of some distribution problems getting the gas there. Gas is around $2.00 a gallon there now because it is in short supply. The article said that people have resorted to following tanker trucks to find gas, and several fistfights have erupted at the gas stations with mature adults doing things like cutting in line to fill up the Ford Expidition, and it said that another man threatened to blow up a gas station. It said the Autozone was sold out of siphon hoses and gas cans. Probably makes some people wish they had not purchased those gas guzzling Sport Utility Vehicles. Article at this link.

..................Civility goes out the window when people get frustrated and desperate. When I get my '66 running, it's going to have a single port engine so that I can get 30+ mpg (assuming that I can bring myself to drive it sensibly).

That is definately true. It is every man for themselves in that type of situation. People on the Titanic let people drown instead of letting them on their lifeboats. I remember reading that after WWII, there was a food shortage in Germany, and someone shot and killed a man for stealing One Potato.

You should of been in Michigan after the blackout. Unbelievable behavior at the pumps and at stores. The rich people would buy water by the cases from the store, and the poor/middle class folks where hoping to get one bottle. Made me feel good when I was at home depot and some idiot thought he could buy the generator I had on my cart. The price was all the way up to $750 for a $600 generator. I said jokingly, $900 and it's yours. He was counting the money in his pocket as I was walking away laughing. Money can't buy everything.

If you had turned your back on that cart for 10 seconds or more, you probably would have turned around to find that it had rolled off somewhere else on its own. You would run out to the parking lot just in time to see it being loaded into the back of a Sport Utility Vehicle. There is already going to be an investigation into why the prices suddenly rose so high in Phoenix. I can tell you why. "Greed" These are the same people that would charge you $10 for a glass of water in the desert, or $100 for a taxi ride out of NYC during the blackout. The governor of Arizona asked people not to hoard gas. Anyone with a Ford Expidition/Suburban would be hoarding gas just by filling up their 40 gallon tank.

Not necessarily so. My F-150 takes about 39 gallons to totally fill up. I usually run that out in less than a week. If I fill up, then I've go just enough gas for 5 days. I don't really call that hoarding. A VW doesn't do everything an F-150 4X4 can do out here in farming country.

Exactly. Was just out getting ready to haul some big round bales of hay. The bales weigh about 1800 pounds each. Couldn't quite figure out how I could do that with my bug or ghia.

yes, but then you obviously have a diesel truck - a fellow would have to be a fool to get a gasoline engine to do that sort of work. Are diesel prices skyrocketing also or are the folk driving diesels glad to have diesels for the prices as well as for the mileage?

Would squish that sucker flat.

Nope, truck is gas. 86 Chev 1 ton dually with a built up 454. Only has about 70,000 miles on it and 0 rust.

So, call me a fool.

Here in Finland (same price level as seems to be common in the Europe) the gasoline costs 1,120 eur/ltr (last time I have purchased some). That is 4,70 USD/g. That is one reason, we do not have 4 liter V8 engines on all our daily drivers here ;) My daily driver transports me averagely

33 miles per gallon.
