Peoples Car

VW was once the name associated with the people car. The original Beetle offered an outstanding value as a very reliable car that almost anyone could afford. VW has since abandoned this market in hopes of going more upscale.

In todays market what would be considered the peoples car? It looks like the car most closely matching this at least in the U.S. market. would be the Hyundai Accent. A stripped down version with no air and a 5speed sells for around $7500 and includes a 5 year/60000 mile warranty and a 10year/ 100,000 powertrain warranty. There is nothing else on the market right now that can touch this kind of value that I can find. The Accords and Camrys offer a good quality car, but their prices are high. I saw a loaded Camry with V6, Leather etc for a sticker price of $29,000

The reason I was looking at cars was that the wifes car is getting older and will probably be in need of replacement soon, although I would rather spend the money on VW restoration. :o) We were thinking about Hyundai, but unfortunately she would want something a little bigger than the Accent like the Sonata that also costs more. Does anyone here own a Hyundai and have they been reliable?

In terms of drivetrain and electrical system reliability, today's Hyundai Accent and a "new" Beetle with fifty year old technology would probably be evenly matched. The same could also be said about gas mileage and oil usage. However, in terms of build quality, charisma (fun-to-drive factor), styling, resale value and long-term durability the Beetle would win out. The Hyundai would win on safety and noise levels.

Kia Rio's aren't any better or worse than the Accent, but they would come even closer to the utilitarian mission of the Beetle. They are also closer to the utilitarian concept of the Beetle than the Accent, they are probably most 'stripped' of the cars sold here, so the Rio must be considered the heir apparent to the almighty Beetle!

As far as safety goes the New beetle would definitely win out.. was safest car on the road for a few years. Cars to buy for your budget..

I am also looking at the same kind of cars too so I have do some research..

Toyota Corolla Ford Focus Dodge Neon Mazda Protege' Nissan Sentra

Hope this helps.. I personally and probaly going to get the corolla as it just drives nice and feels good and looks decent to me. Hyundai are good cars, shitty resale but good commuter cars..

The Mazda is a good quality car. My 95 Escort Wagon is a joint venture between Ford and Mazda, so most of the car is Mazda. Last I heard, Ford owned something like 40% of Mazda, but it may be different now.

We saw the Echo when looking at the Camry, but she did not like the size or looks of the Echo. I am sure it is a good car as Toyota always does a good job on quality.

yes bill, they are great vehicles....i have an 89 mazda b2200 pickup that i use daily as a worktruck...i can't kill it...it is ready to flip 200k, and the compression check shows that it still has 95% of what the "factory specs" claim the compression was new....no major problems, or hell even minor ones for that matter....just general maintenance....i have not owned it since new, but i bought it from a friend, so i have access to what has been done to it since new...(so far just regular scheduled maintenance)... Men are cute aren't they. I mean, you never see women posting "my husband wants a new set of wheels so I guess I'll be going without the for a while".

Bless you :o)

well Clare, its kinda funny...because men post it because it is

*true*...i was "shopping" for a new worktruck....her car is fine...while on a lot with me looking at trucks, she began "looking" at cars...suddenly her car became old, and needed replacing...LOL...so with our "budget" it is one or the other, not both...being smart enough to realize that "if mama ain't happy no one is" i will step back and we will purchase a car.......just like last time... That is because when a couple can only afford one new or nicer car, the woman almost always gets it. I have a neighbor whose wife drives around in a 1990 Minivan, while the husband recently purchased a brand new Explorer 4door pickup truck. I think that I need to talk to this guy and so I can find out why this is the only family in the neighborhood that has its priorities in order. :o) Bill Berckman

If no meant no, then every man would die a virgin :o) Just because she said no does not mean that you will not soon be owning this bike. Getting this motorcycle today should be a reality if you carefully follow the following Three steps:

1) Make decision that you are going to get it anyway because you deserve it. 2) Go to dealership, make purchase of desired motorcycle and enjoy the ride. 3) Call Joey and make sure that he will kick the cat out tonight so you can sleep on his couch when you get kicked out of your house by the wife. . :o)

I believe Mazda is owned by GM or Chevrolet.. I'm sure its a GM but here locally in Seattle my Chevy dealer is also the Mazda dealer, and go to the website chevrolet's website and you see mazda on it.

Hate to say this, Bill, but IMHO you are better off with a used car than a new Hundai. For example, I have a '99 Taurus station wagon that gets

25mpg at 75mph with the air on, and up to 30mpg otherwise. It climbs any mountain with the best of them and it has the carrying capacity of a 1/2 ton truck. I kid you not. It's all in the specs. And it can be had as cheap as a brand new Hundai.

If you want better than 30mpg and don't need the capacity (I do), then still, any used car but a Hundai is (IMHO!) better.

The Probe was also a Ford/Mazda joint venture. The Ford version was the Probe, and the Mazda version was the MX-6. Bill Berckman
