Some guy in Minnesota got a whopping speeding ticket on his motorcycle. He was traveling at 205 mph when clocked. Article here.

Greg on 2 wheel Tuesday attempted to disproved that last night. He said AMA superbikes only broke 200mph last year. It was a Honda 1000 which doesn't have that capability but Greg said maybe if it were very highly modified with nitrous and a turbo...

I'm not a bike pers> Some guy in Minnesota got a whopping speeding ticket on his motorcycle. He

Saw that and figured the guy was a real idiot. A big bug or bird and it would all be over with.

...its should be a pretty easilly beat-able ticket. I'd start by disproving the bike can even attain such a speed and worjk from there on the ovbvious fallibility of stopwatch timing and math produced tickets. And finally wind up wioth the fact that the officer who shows up in court isd most likely going to be the guy who wrote the ticket....and he actually *winessed* nothing, and was writing a ticket based on a second hand observation based on questionable methodology. The driving without a license ticket, however, will likely stand...but possibly not. Many judges show leniency on that as wwell if he gets the proper endorsement before court. Whatever the outcome that ticket would be a definitely a framed keeper if issured to me. =-)

....Gareth (Who has never been fatser than 165mph on a bike...because...well duh thats as fast as the damn thing would go )

I think that "stock" that bike is supposed to be good for about 175 and that they even said in one article I was reading that it was child's play to tweak the bike to allow it to do over 200.

and worjk from there

Yeah, someone on the motorcycle group said something like ask "Are you qualified to operate a stopwatch?" When they say yes, say "And when is the last time you calibrated the stopwatch that was used?"

That's true about the driving without the motorcycle endorsement thingie. Has happened to me. I'll bet he'll still get a ticket for "exceeding a safe speed" or something like that.

I hit about 110 mph about 3 minutes after getting on a Katana 750 that a co-worker let me ride but had to slow down because it was lunch hour and there was traffic ahead. What a rush. :-D I think I'd be good for about 130-140 before I'd start to pee down my leg.

...I need to start playin g with those children. 200mph is not an easy number to hit on two wheels....yes it has been done...easy??? 1000cc?? tell the boys going for the record in the measured mile that it is easy wiith a couple of bolt on mods. Don't believe everything you read in the news.

....yup looks like 205mph should be a cakewalk for any aquid with a couple grand to blow on bolt on goodies. ;-)

Is that a mile starting from a standstill? These guys were out on a highway already at pretty high speeds before the faster of the two of them decided to pull away.

Is that a challenge? :-D

Just dug this up:

VTR1000 SP1 (RC51) Performance Engine size 999cc Power 134bhp@9500rpm Engine type lc, 4 stroke, 8 valve, 90° v-twin Torque 77ft lb@8000rpm Top Speed 168mph(est.)

Wow, 168 mph stock with only 134 hp? Then I found this:

Quote: "'I'd had the feeling all morning that Honda's all-new CBR1000RR was hooking up exceptionally well -- transferring its 172 (claimed) horsepower to the track efficiently and letting me get on the throttle sooner exiting corners. But now I had proof."

Wow, 172 hp? That's a 28% improvement over the VTR1000. Sure, a 28% improvement in hp doesn't mean a 28% improvement in top speed, but if it did then top speed on that cbr would be 215 mph. It sure does seem likely to me that the top speed on that CBR "from the factory" would easily be 175 or above since the much less powerful bike has a ~168 top speed. I'm sure that could be tweaked some for a little extra speed with loss of day-to-day driveability. I've never heard of a production vehicle that couldn't. All I'm saying is that I believe it's possible that the kid could have actually been doing 205 mph on that bike.

Bah, all guesses and theory. I say measure the depth of the pits left in his helmet or face from all the bugs. That should prove unequivocally whether he was going the reported speed. ;)

I had a kawasaki 500 back in the mid-70's. 3 cyl, 2 stroke. It was supposed to have a top end of 150 or more. Stock. Think it was called the mach 3 or something along those lines.

I had it to 110 once. Decided that was fast enough.

...H1 500...mach III. It later became the KH 500, I had a 76...th last year. I think the 150 was a little optimistic...the 750 version would do it, but not the 500. This site lists the top spoeed as 122mph, and that seems a lot closer. I know I couldn't get much more than that out of mine and I sure tried I'd say 130 would have been absolute limit.

...of course with porting and chambers the speed goes up dramatically...

I' ve hit 150 on a HONDA hurrican 1000 was trying for 165, I just didn't weigh enough , did about the same on the suzuki 1300 Gareth got 165 on that bike was crazy, I'm sure a few mods and it could have been a 200mph bike

Mario

I think mine was a 75. Ugly brown color. And real s***ty gas mileage. Of course, that could have been the rider. I had the chain come apart and turn to shrapnel once. It wasn't pretty and wasn't fun.

State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeasternMinnesota on the Wisconsin state line, watching two motorcyclists racingalong U.S. Highway 61 on Saturday. One of the riders shot forward, and Loneyclicked his stopwatch once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on theroad and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, whichLoney calculated to be 205 mph. In some jurisdictions, if the pilot was alone in the aircraft, then the case may not be valid because it is assumed that the pilot is really supposed to be busy with flying the airplane and trying to do two things at once leads to incredible errors and lapses. There should be a pilot and a spotter.

Also, both the "4.39 seconds" and the "205 mph" are essentially incorrect (misleading) statements in that they imply a level of precision (0.01 seconds) and that is simply not possible with a handheld stopwatch.

It is reasonable to add an error margin of something like +/- 0.25 seconds (?) of possible timing error to both the Start and Stop button-presses on the stopwatch. That means that the "4.39 seconds" would more reasonably presented as 4.4 seconds +/- 0.5 in total (or between 3.9 and 4.9 seconds).

Thus, the speed is somewhere between about 185 to about 230 mph.

Obviously there's nothing to be gained in arguing about the exact top speed of motorcycles based on such poor data. It would have been better to time the bike over a longer distance (multiple 1/4 mile markers) and more time to reduce the relative magnitude of the button-pressing error and provide a narrow speed range.

All this assumes that the 1/4 mile markers are placed perfectly and that no joker has inserted extra markers in between.

Of course, if the pilot testifies that, "I'd never seen anything move that fast", then it's Guilty + Case Closed for basic speeding in the 'really damn fast' category anyway.

Just don't read too much into the "205 mph".

...hmmm...had that happen one sunnyy day when I was doing about 80mph. I pulled in the clutch, and freed up the rear wheel....when I got down to about 20mph or so I dumped the clutch back out and it broke free. I waited about 20 minutes for it to cool down and tried it. It actually started on the second kick!! Of course it was only running on two cylkonders...but it took me home =-)

Pretty sure I've linked to this clip in the past, but it seems fitting to link it again:

Dunno, a silly little film clip doesn't seem to do the experience any justice. ;) Is kind of funny how "slow" the dashed lines on the road go by once he drops down to 100.

On my bike, a 2003 Yamaha Roadstar Silverado, I can hit 130 within a half a mile if conditions are right. And that bike weighs in at 750 lbs soaking wet. Of course I would never do such a thing on the hiways or anything *winkwinknudgenudge*

I've got a 2002 Silverado, but mine only has the 650 instead of the

1100 like I'll bet yours does. Top speed on it is somewhere around 105 with the windscreen off. No more than 110 for sure. Never tried to push it that fast with the windscreen on. Uh...or with it off. *wink wink nudge nudge back*
