Pondo on bare metal or on primer?

I'm welding som panels into my 1303. I will have to use some Pondo like stuff. Should i put it on the bare metal or should i use some kind of primer first? Greetings from Michael

Bare metal, appropriately roughed up so that the "Bondo" holds.

the only primer that itis okay to use filler over is epoxy primer...i personally recomend you take it to bare metal with 80 (or 40) grit paper so there will be some good scratches in the surface for the filler to bite on....THEN follow up with epoxy primer....that is MY preference anyway... JT

Right: use Bondo on bare metal or epoxy primer only. I prefer to put it over epoxy, as it sticks & feathers better. After working the bondo I re-epoxy, then use high-build primer for blocking. HTH, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

What kind of epoxy primer do you use? I'm working with planes. There we use also epoxy primer. This is a kind of yellow stuff, which has to be blended with hardener 1 part to 1 part primer. It is very thin liquid. Almost like water. I hope that this stuff is useable for my 1303.

I wouldn't use anything that thin. I use PPG (Ditzler) DP50. It's light gray, 2 to 1 mix, can be thinned some for a sealer. ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

i was always partial to the olive drab color of the DP40....i am currently coating my bug(as i strip it down to metal) with a sherwin williams line's epoxy primer...it is 1:1 ratio...."western auto finishes" i believe is the line...available at my local fischer autoparts.... JT

Sherwin Williams has always been far from the quality of Ditzler in the past. Don't know what they're doing now, but i wouldn't trust them on something I cared about (which is everything I paint). ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

there products are decent products...my father in law is a lifetime bodyman as are many in my family....they all use the "western" line of primers on occassion....i am merely using epoxy/etching primer from them...my paint will be quite "different"....think chameleon JT

so was I...kinda...

okay will restate(cleanly) their epoxy primer is very good *even* for a cheaper line of products....otherwise *I* would not use it...i don't plan on putting 5k worth of paint on a bad base... JT
