That's right; the pickle fork is not the appropriate tool. You need the "lever-action" ball joint tool. Pic here:

Even with the tool, removal can be tough. Apply full force with the tool, then give the side of the spindle a healthy whack with hammer. Should hear a loud explosion noise as the stud pops out.
