SP VS DP

Just a question, what are the advantages/disadvantages of a single port 1600 VS a dual port 1600? I have both and want to decide what to build up, has to go into a split bus.

Depends on what you are looking for. If you are leaving the engine as a stock 1600, then I generally like the SP better because 1) the stock carbs are better (30 pict 1,2 as opposed to 34pict3), 2) More low end grunt, 3) you don't have to worry about those damn manifold boots leaking.

However, the DP does breathe better and has a slight advantage in HP. It doesn't feel as strong down low, but its power feels like it comes a bit later.

These are my opinions and observations after having both engines. I have a 1600 SP in my Bug and a 1600 DP in my Super. I'll take a single port any day.

BUT, if you are going to mod the engine, the DP is better.

Any clearer? You won't go wrong with either choice, and I'm sure others will chime in as well with some advice.

Single port offers better intake vacuum and air velocity, and this results in better low end operation. It becomes a little restrictive at high rpms.

Dual port is able to breathe better, and allows more top end power.

The original DP heads love to crack. I buy the after market that have more "meat" cast in between the spark plug/ valves. takes a longer plug.
