Starting sometimes

On my 74 Super... The motor is back in and starter won't turn. I can bump start the car and run it, turn the ignition off, turn it to start again and it will crank and start. I can do this over and over until I let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then it won't crank again. Just a bad contact? Bad solenoid? Seat belt Relay? Yes to one of the above?

Thanks.

in NEUTRAL!)

In your case, it may be worth testing at the Ignition switch next time it refuses to crank. Pull the black plug off the bottom of the Ignition switch. Make a little jumper (paper clip) and insert from Term #30 to #15 (Red to Blk). If it cranks with paper clip but won't when plugged in, Ignition switch is bad.

Do this test a few times for consistency because you want to be damn sure before changing the switch!

Thanks Speedy. I'll give it a try.

Hi,

Did you replace the starter bushing when you replaced the motor. The bushing could be tight and after warming a little it can spin freely, then when it cools the bushing shrinks again to tight. Just a thought.

Fweem.

Also hold your jumper (paper clip) with some sort of pliers...............it can get very hot if there's a problem with something down the line causing high resistance..GLOVES!

When it refuses to crank, do you hear the solenoid "click" as you turn the key to Start?

James ducks as the start of a hard start relay thread gets going..........BTW am going down that route any day now !

There is a "click". I jumped across the solenoid and it cranked and continued to do so a few times as I was working on adjusting the carb. I drove it around the the block parked it, went back a little while later and nothing. Bumped started the next time, fired right up, shut it back down, turned the key and it cranked. Hmm... I'll just make sure I park it facing down hill all the time.

not always. just lots of resistance in the long wire to it. this is where the "hard start relay" thread begins. get one . a relay that makes the connection right from the battery to the solenoid. been there done that, many times. all older VWs will eventually need this kit. I just get an older Ford firewall relay. DIY

& good luck!
