I plan on changing fluid and remember that John C said amsoil worked well. Has anyone in the group used any other synthetic gear oils? I hope it will help with the finding of gears.

I use redline synth - good stuff; pricey though.
Dennis,
Nothing more esoteric than GL-4 gear oil is needed for the VeeDub tranny...you can buy it at your local NAPA parts store relatively cheap. GL-4 is the type recommended because GL-5 oil has additives that can be detrimental to the health of the brass synchros in the VW tranny. I rebuilt my Bug engine and changed the fluid using GL-4; it shifts like a dream. What will really get your ride shifting like a poor mans Porsche is to replace the shift bushing, clean and grease the shift shaft and replace the mushy rubber shaft coupling with a urethane one. Also clean, grease and adjust the shifter. This will make a much greater improvement in how your VeeDub shifts than buying some "snake oil" or incorrect tranny fluid.
