I've noticed some moisture and a little rust up on the oil dipstick. No milk in the oil so it's not coming from there. I'm guessing it's condensation from only driving 10 miles back and forth to work each day here on the Southern California coast... Any other thoughts on what might be causing it?

Hi Michael,
it may be a malfunction of the flame trap(pcv) system. You may try to check that out, or it may just be lots -o- condensation from the ocean air( that the flame trap should be taking care of).

I shoulda thought of that. It isn't my first thought, but flame trap plugging is so common and so troublesome when it happens it definitely needs to be checked. Thanks!

No problem, My flame trap was so messed up when Ibought my most recent used Volvo(740GLE) that when I did get around to hooking the flame trap assembly properly, it was so full of carbon etc. that it fouled my plugs, and destroyed my catylitic converter. Expensive. Even through IPD the oil reclaimation box, and flame trap, and dip tube, and up tube, shouldn't come to more than 40-45 bucks. You may also want to try volvopartsdirect.com, I got a bunch of parts from those guys recently. The price was right, and the parts were of a good quality.

How's the O-ring on the dipstick? If it's dried out and hardened it can let moisture in, but the short trips are certainly not helping it.
